About the 2026 Glycoscience Symposium
The Georgia Glycobiology Symposium aims to bring
together researchers across disciplines to share ideas and collaborate on solving complex biological and disease-related challenges, promoting integrated approaches to glycan research and its real-world applications.
Glycans are diverse carbohydrates that represent a critical yet understudied layer of biological information, comparable to the genome and proteome. They play key roles in protein folding, cell communication, and immune responses, and abnormal glycosylation can actively drive diseases such as cancer and infections.
Recent advances in glycomics have deepened mechanistic understanding, revealing glycans as sensitive indicators of health and disease, though much remains unexplored. Moving forward, the future will enable new diagnostics, vaccines, and therapies, improving disease understanding and treatment.
About the
Complex Carbohydrate Research Center
The Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (CCRC) at the University of Georgia was established in 1985 as one of the first research centers dedicated specifically to the study of complex carbohydrates and founded to address the growing recognition that glycans play essential biological roles but were historically difficult to study due to their structural complexity.
Over time, the CCRC has become a global leader in glycoscience, developing advanced analytical tools, methodologies, and resources that have significantly advanced the field and its applications in biotechnology, plant science, and human health.
